The Importance of Location
Utilising GPS and mapping services is now well established
in a diverse range of industries from transport to asset management
and service management. The real key to tapping GPS information
is to integrate and make use of this within a business application.
Making use of GPS information in a relevant manner unlocks
the potential of Location based services.
Location services provide the ability to perform simple operations
such as locate vehicles and track journeys. Simple operations
are also catered for such as ‘Where is my vehicle’
and ‘Where has my vehicle been’ as well as visual
maps of locations of the entire fleet. More importantly Location
services are used to add location information into say Transport
jobs to allow automatic initiation of transport events. For
transport operators this provides significant value by removing
the need for drivers to verify transport events such as Arrival,
Departure, Loading etc as these events are now processed automatically
based on the location of the vehicle and the particular ‘job’
the driver is undertaking.
The use of Location services also verify where an event occurred.
In Transport examples it can also assist in providing a verification
of location for Proof of Delivery and all associated transport
events. In asset management examples, assets can be located
and managed and detailed geographical history can be recorded.
Tracking break-time, down-time and demurrage can is also
made available and integrated into the business application.
As an example, contracts for transport services are becoming
heavily KPI based and Location services provides even greater
capabilities to assist operators in meeting and reporting
on their KPI’s.
Importantly, location services provides the ability for ‘pro-active’
services such as pre-warning a client that a delivery or service
technician is imminent based on their current GPS location.
There is therefore capability to provide automatic ‘events’
based on GPS location including services such as sending an
SMS to a client of the approaching delivery or technician.
Business owners can significantly reduce revenue collection
times, reduce demurrage and delays and virtually eliminate
‘lost jobs’ and the revenue associated with that
job.
Xmotion Transporta is an example of a business application
taking advantage of Location services. Contact InterDev for
